I am wanting to start a chick breeding and hatching project this year. I wanted to start with four breeds; white leghorn, barred rock, RIR, and buff orpington. I have two barred rock roosters and around 8 or 9 hens already. I bought some buff orpington chicks last weekend, so that was my start. After looking around, RIRs are everywhere, and noone has white leghorns. So, I had to order from a hatchery. But, since RIRs are so prevalent in my area, I changed my mind and went with New Hampshire reds. In a month or so, I will order an incubator and start building some breeding pens this spring. Hopefully I will be able to start hatching some barred rocks by early summer, and by mid fall be able to start hatching out some of each of the other breeds for replacement layers and for chicks to sell. I hope Fire-man makes his way over here so I can pick his brain as I start this project.

I just added 16 pullet chicks myself. I really like the way Leghorns lay, But as a rule White chickens get picked off by hawks pretty quickly here.
I had intended to add some brown leghorns to the mix but there were none available at the time.
