I was out running errands with my daughter today, when we spotted a couple of trucks pulled off onto the shoulder. Just beyond them was a deer in the ditch, just kind of laying there, with her head up, looking around. I was curious, so pulled over and went to talk to the men from the trucks. Turned out that another vehicle had hit the deer, shattered both rear legs, then left. The first driver who pulled over called the state patrol and was waiting for them to show up.
I asked right away if either of the men wanted the deer. They decided she was too badly damaged for the meat to be any good, but asked if I wanted it. Yes! Eventually a state trooper showed up, and, after he shot her SIX times without killing her (that was bad), another man walked up with a knife and cut her throat. When she finally died, the men helped me load her into the back of my minivan; the trooper gave me a possession tag; and away we went. Home to feed the hounds. It was a small doe, but will keep the dogs fed for at least a week or so.
Besides saving on a week's worth of dog food, what was notable to me about this situation was that, not too many years ago, I would have been very squeamish about handling a dead deer, let alone feeding it (whole) to my dogs and having a deer carcass out in the yard for a week! Now, however, I am all about practicality. Plus, it helps that we have a large (one acre) yard where I could put the deer behind a tree, lol.
